This week Future Islands released a video to accompany their February single, Ran.
The video, directed by Albert Birney, is set in the group’s hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, and features an anxious Samuel T. Herring barrelling through the suburbs and outskirts of the city. Whether he is running to or from something is in the eye of the beholder.
However, the grey and gloomy skies set a narrative as Herring rushes through the damp fields and tall-trees of Baltimore: escape is on his mind.
Melancholy is increased in the chorus with a simmering fire cascading its embers over Herring’s face. In a time where videos parade sophistication, sunshine, or party lifestyle, Future Islands set a stark contrast of who they are, where they come from and what they’re about.
“Ran” is the lead single from the forthcoming album, The Far Field, set for release under 4AD on April 7th.
